May 2nd brought the highly anticipated debut of the third and final season of “The Boondocks.” The series, widely noted for its comedic appeal, controversy, and head on confrontation of pop culture, started off with a bang as Woodcrest became the home of a documentary following the 2008 campaign and election of Barack “Obeezy” Obama. The Freeman’s are made the centerpiece of this documentary as Obama is criticized for being myspace friends with Huey and is forced to separate himself from Huey, who has been cast alongside the likes of Jeremiah Wright and labeled as a domestic terrorist. Predictably, Riley and Granddad are contributors and victims to the infatuation for Obama that swept the nation, and particularly Black America, resulting in blind, and sometimes ignorant, lust for the presidential nominee. The episode touches critically on many facets of the insanity that was the 2008 election including the celebrity involvement in rallying for Obama and features a music video by Will.I.Am and Thugnificent entitled “Dick Riding For Obama.”
Episode 2 featured Thugnificent as his short rap career waned and he lost his luxuries to repossession. He tried everything to stay hot including using autotune on every song on his album and starting a rap beef with upcoming rapper Sergeant Gutter, who is only 15 years old and very reminiscent of Soldier Boy. The beef only sends Thugnificent’s career into a downward spiral faster and he is forced to try alternative methods to paying the bills including a failed attempt at selling crack. The episode lends an eye to the reality and buffoonery that is all too common in hip hop today. The artists spend way too much, often have very short careers, and often end up going broke, as did Thugnificent.
